RMT welcomes Network Rail move on Merseyrail infrastructure

RMT: April 7 2006

BRITAIN'S BIGGEST rail union RMT today welcomed Network Rail?s decision not to hand over infrastructure operations, such as signalling and maintenance, to train operating company Merseyrail.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "We understand that the Secretary of State for Transport gave Network Rail the opportunity to either keep work in-house or outsource it.

"Outsourcing would have represented a complete reversal of Network Rail's position of keeping work in-house.

"RMT has campaigned for 12 months on this issue and the decision represents a good move for the industry, our members and the travelling public," Bob Crow said.
